The FX Battlefield Guide

Written by Jesse Lau · Updated 2026-08-05 · 4 min read

FX Battlefield is a live map at fxdiary.com that renders 28 currency pairs plus Bitcoin as nine factions at war. Circle size is σ-normalized strength — how unusual a currency's move is against its own recent volatility, not its raw percentage change. A reversal radar scans for trend exhaustion using two timeframes at once, and a CFTC COT panel shows where speculative money is already positioned. This guide explains each piece and how they fit together.

Start here

The map answers one question continuously: which currency is winning right now, and by how much relative to its own normal? Everything else on the site is built on top of that measurement.

If you have five minutes, read σ-normalized currency strength first — it is the measurement everything else depends on. If you already know what a z-score is, jump straight to the reversal radar.

Quick glossary

TermWhat it means here
σ (sigma)Standard deviations. A pair moving "+2σ" moved twice its own typical amount for that time window.
StrengthA currency's signed z-score averaged across its eight fronts. Positive = winning broadly, not just against one opponent.
Tracer fireThe animated line on a front. It flows toward the currently stronger currency of that pair.
PresetThe timeframe trio the radar uses: an anchor plus two confirming timeframes. Official is 1d←4h+1h.
COTCommitments of Traders — the CFTC's weekly report of futures positioning, published Fridays.
Net/OISpeculative net position divided by total open interest. Concentration, with market size divided out.
Idx52Where today's net position sits between its own 52-week high and low. 0 = most short in a year, 100 = most long.
Δ (delta)The week-over-week change in net position. Direction of the change, not its level.

Frequently asked questions

Is FX Battlefield free?

The live map, the strength rankings, the war feed, the full CFTC COT panel and the public signal ledger are free and need no account. A Pro subscription ($9.90/month) adds real-time Telegram delivery of radar signals across 31 instruments, the Hard-Money battlefield including Gold and Silver, the 1-day and 1-week strength views, and the Pro modes in Chart Sense.

Where does the price data come from?

Live quotes stream over a public market-data websocket and refresh roughly once per second, with a 1–2 second delay. Positioning data comes directly from the CFTC's public Commitments of Traders dataset. Central bank policy rates come from the BIS.

Do the reversal signals have a proven edge?

Not on their own, and we say so on the page itself. Our own backtests show raw strength-reversal signals carry no standalone positive expectancy. The radar's job is to narrow 31 instruments down to a handful worth looking at. The edge, if any, comes from what you check next — which is what the workflow guide is about.

Why can I see losing signals in the ledger?

Because hiding them would make the ledger worthless. Every signal the engine fires is written by machine, with its 1h/4h/1d/1w follow-up attached — reversals and continuations alike. New signals stay locked for 24 hours on the public page, then unlock automatically for audit.

How often does the COT panel update?

The CFTC publishes on Friday afternoon US time. The site fetches on a three-attempt ladder Friday evening and Saturday morning UTC, so the panel is current by Saturday.

Does this work for Bitcoin and gold?

Bitcoin trades on the map alongside the eight fiat currencies and keeps trading through the weekend when FX is closed. Gold and Silver appear on the Hard-Money battlefield, which is a Pro view.
