Training Market Feel with Chart Sense
Why a game at all
Live trading is a terrible teacher. Feedback arrives days late, every result is polluted by luck, and the tuition is real money. Deliberate practice needs the opposite: fast repetitions, immediate feedback, zero cost per mistake. That is exactly what a replay game provides — the charts are real history with instrument and dates hidden, so you cannot cheat by remembering the news, and every guess is graded within seconds.
One honest caveat up front: the game measures your reading of price action, not your discipline under real losses. Those are different muscles.
The four modes are a curriculum
| Mode | The question | The lesson it forces |
|---|---|---|
| Up / Down | Does the next candle close higher or lower? | Most people hover near 50%. Single-candle direction is close to a coin flip even for professionals — "being right" is the wrong goal. |
| 3-Way | Up, down — or inside the ±½ ATR14 band? | Most of the time the market goes nowhere. Seeing the gold band teaches what "nowhere" looks like in ATR terms. |
| TP/SL race | Which is hit first: last close +2 ATR or −2 ATR? | Direction is not enough — you must survive the path. A trade that ends up right can stop you out on the way. |
| ROI Lab (Pro) | Set stop and target yourself (up to 10×ATR each), pick a side | Scored in R: target = +RR, stop = −1R. At RR 3 you profit from a 30% hit rate — expectancy, not accuracy, pays. |
Play them in order. Each mode's frustration is the setup for the next mode's insight.
The pass button
Every mode has a ⏭ Pass button, and passing still consumes one of your 20 rounds. That is deliberate: standing aside is a position, and its cost is opportunity. In ROI Lab a pass replays both hypothetical outcomes — "long would have stopped out on bar 5, short would have hit target on bar 3" — so you see exactly what your hesitation bought or saved. Learning when not to play is the cheapest edge there is.
Timeframes
Charts come in 1-hour, 4-hour and daily. The mechanics are identical; the feel is not. Switch to 1H and watch the ATR readout drop from ~0.8% to ~0.1% of price — the same "2 ATR stop" is a different world. Scalper instincts and swing instincts are trained separately, on the timeframe you actually trade.
What a game cannot teach
- Position sizing under fear. The game bets nothing. Sizing with real money is the skill that ruins most traders — pair the game with the risk of ruin calculator to make that arithmetic concrete.
- Context. The game hides the instrument on purpose, so it cannot teach you what positioning or the calendar add — that layer is what the workflow guide covers.
- Patience across days. A 100-bar replay takes two seconds; holding a real position for 100 hours does not.
Used for what it is — a fast feedback loop on chart reading and stop/target geometry — twenty rounds a day is more structured screen time than most traders ever give themselves. Open the game and find out which mode humbles you.
